Memorial Day – Honor and Remember
Memorial Day. As the picture states, a time to celebrate, honor and remember. However, it’s time to take a look at how we celebrate events such as Memorial Day. For many it has become just another holiday, a long weekend giving them the chance to get away. Some spend more time drinking than they do remembering, if they remember at all. And yet remembrance is what it’s all about. Not only is it important to acknowledge that a soldier has died, it’s important to remember why that soldier died. They died trying to make their country a better place. Bottom line. They saw a way that they could contribute, to make their life have meaning. How many of us go to work each day, and do just enough to get by. We come home and sit on the couch, watch a TV show. But a soldier has chosen a different path. There are many volunteers across the world, each choosing the way in which they can contribute to making someone’s lives better. A soldier, too, is looking to make someone’s life better – yours. They may not even realize it, but by keeping your world safe, you have a better life. It’s important to realize this, so we can remember not only that they died, but what would our world look like if they hadn’t. It’s easy to be comfortable on our couch and forget we really do have a good life. Let’s try to take time to remember why. Take time from your picnic, your camping trip, your party with your friends. Take time to reflect the role of a soldier’s life in the bigger picture of our freedom. Don’t just celebrate. Take time to honor, and remember as well. That is what Memorial Day is really about.
